The Eleventh Day Of Christmas: Twelfth Night - Ep. 11
Pipers get those pipes a-piping, it's time to make those noise-makers make some noise! Many of our modern New Year's Eve traditions originated with Twelfth Night celebrations in England more than 500 years ago, long before it was fashionable to celebrate Christmas.
Apples are important on Twelfth Night, as they were available year round and much like evergreens were a symbol of life. It was customary to drink wassail with toasted bread for dipping, and 'raise a toast' to one another.
Then there was the boozy Twelfth Night Cake, a precursor to the holiday fruitcakes we enjoy today. In english tradition it was common to place a bean in the Twelfth Night Cake, and appoint a “Lord of Misrule” for the day.
Shakespeare's famous play depicts Twelfth Night as a gender-bending comedy of errors, ...

A Wonderful "Twelfth Night" Cake!
Jon and Kevin are in the kitchen today making a big recipe: a 5-lb. twelfth cake. Twelfth cakes were the center attraction to Twelfth Night celebrations. They are easily documentable in 18th century texts, but interestingly, recipes do not appear in cookbooks until the early 19th century. So for this episode, in the absence of 18th century recipes specifically called "twelfth cake,"Jon and Kevin chose another "great cake" recipe called "Bride's Cake." It's virtually identical in ingredients and technique to the twelfth cake recipes of the early 1800s. Today's recipe comes from Richard Brigg's 1788 cookbook, "The English Art of Cookery." It's a wonderful, complex cake that is perfect for a traditional holiday dessert. Enjoy! #townsends12thnight

SUMMARY
=======
Twelfth Night is a festival in some branches of Christianity marking the coming of the Epiphany. Different traditions mark the date of Twelfth Night on either 5 January or 6 January; the Church of England, Mother Church of the Anglican Communion, celebrates Twelfth Night on the 5th and "refers to the night before Epiphany, the day when the nativity story tells us that the wise men visited the infant Jesus". In Western Church traditions, the Twelfth Night concludes the Twelve Days of Christmas; although, in others, the Twelfth Night may refer to the eve of the Twelfth Day.
Bruce Forbes writes:In 567 the Council of Tours proclaimed that the entire period between Christmas and Epiphany should be considered part of the celebration, creating what became known as the twelve days of Christmas, or what the English called Christmastide. On the last of the twelve days, called Twelfth Night, various cultures developed a wide range of additional special festivities. The variation extends even to the issue of how to count the days. If Christmas Day is the first of the twelve days, then Twelfth Night would be on January 5, the eve of Epiphany. If December 26, the day after Christmas, is the first day, then Twelfth Night falls on January 6, the evening of Epiphany itself.
A belief has arisen in modern times, in some English-speaking countries, that it is unlucky to leave Christmas decorations hanging after Twelfth Night, a tradition originally attached to the festival of Candlemas (2 February), which celebrates the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Other popular Twelfth Night customs include singing Christmas carols, chalking the door, having one's house blessed, merrymaking, as well as attending church services.

Shakespeare's famous play depicts Twelfth Night as a gender-bending comedy of errors, where men dressed as women dress as men and act out romantic entanglements with men and women alike.
Confused? That's the point! The English would masquerade on Twelfth night, often dressing up like the opposite sex, and engage in all sorts of revelry at the behest of the Lord of Misrule. It's a fun, silly day, made all the more festive with exclamations of, "Good cheer!" And "Hey ho! Unto the green holly!" And don't forget to use plenty of thees and thous, and the occasional "prithee" is also appropriate.
We give gifts of books on this day, especially literature, preferably in English, and bonus points for works of William Shakespeare.
As midnight approaches pull your loved ones close and get those pots and pans ready because is the Twelfth day of Christmas is almost here. When the clock strikes twelve, get those drummers drumming, and ring in the new year with all the noise you can muster. A jolly round of Auld Lang Syne is traditional at this point, as cups are filled and loved ones embraced, and toasts of good cheer are lifted to the new year.
